Cobb & Douglas Public Health to Host 16th Annual Power in Truth Conference in Douglasville on Oct. 18

Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH), in partnership with the Live Healthy Douglas Coalition, Douglas County School System (DCSS) and other community partners, is pleased to host the 16th annual Power in Truth (PIT) conference on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 for the prevention of youth substance abuse. The conference is held in Douglasville each year, and is designed to empower Douglas County middle and high school students to make the choice to resist underage drinking, tobacco use, and all other substance abuse.

This year, CDPH and DCSS will also be hosting the PIT Parents’ Night dinner on Monday, October 17, 2016 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Douglasville. Parents’ Night provides Douglas County parents, caregivers and adult advisors knowledge about current substance abuse trends, and resources for prevention and intervention strategies. Dinner is included and parents can register by calling (770) 432-7937.

“The goal of the PIT conference is to help Douglas County teens learn about the dangers and risks associated with substance abuse, and to give them the knowledge they need to resist media manipulation and peer pressure,” said Wende Parker, Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention Director with CDPH. “The addition of Parents’ Night gives parents and caregivers a chance to come together to talk about ways to help teens make the better choice by resisting underage drinking and substance abuse.”

The PIT conference will be held at the First Baptist Church of Douglasville from 9:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Students are selected by the school system to attend the free event and it is considered an approved field trip.

Kit Cummings, Founder of the Power in Peace Project, will be the keynote speaker during both events.
