Douglasville Farmers Market is now one of many nationwide farmers markets that are accepting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ( SNAP) benefits. Farmers Markets have become a popular way for consumers to buy seasonal local food, and has become a valuable option for those on SNAP.
Now that the Douglas County Farmers Market accepts SNAP, it bridges the gap between consumer farmers markets and recipients of SNAP. SNAP recipients can now have access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Through a grant from State Public Health Cobb and Douglas Public Health was able to assist the farmers in becoming certified to accept SNAP. Greg Hutchens, the director of the Douglasville Farmers Market, now has a wireless debit machine available at the market. SNAP participants then run their cards through, receiving tokens to shop at booths of their choice.
Each week the market has 8-10 booths selling a variety of products including fresh fruits and vegetables. Cobb and Douglas Public Health will be partnering with the Douglasville Farmers Market to promote the program to SNAP participants.
The Douglasville Farmers Market is running from now through November 19 at the Douglas County Courthouse located at 8700 Hospital Drive from 4-7 pm.
